Make Your Own Christmas Garland Like a Pro

Picture this… its cold and dark outside, you are snuggled on your sofa with a hot chocolate, the fire is roaring and there is a beautiful festive floral garland adorning your fireplace, which was made by you!

Christmas flower garlands are not just for fireplaces, you can hang them around door frames, drape along your staircase or simply place on your table for a stunning centre piece!

Why not have a go at making your own DIY fresh Christmas garland this year? Or you can gather friends and loved ones and host a Christmas garland making masterclass!

Not sure where to start? We are here to help! Grab your tools and Christmas floristry supplies and follow our steps to make your own Christmas garland like a pro!

What you will for a festive floral garland:

•    OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam Netted Garland
•    Single Brick Tray (or you can use a plate or bowl at home)
•    OASIS® Floral Knife
•    OASIS® Scissors
•    Pot Tape
•    Flowers & foliage of your choice
•    Pinecones (Optional)
•    Cinnamon Sticks (Optional)

Steps to make your own Christmas garland:

Step 1

Gather your OASIS® Floral Foam Netted Garland and cut to size. You can cut your garland to whatever size you like. It comes in handy netted ‘sausages’ so you can cut and save for another project!

Top Tip: Measure your OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam Netted Garland in the area you will be displaying it. And remember, once you add foliage and flowers, the garland will be double the size (if not bigger, depending on what flowers you use).

Step 2

Fill a container or sink full of fresh water and drop your OASIS® Floral Foam netted ‘sausages’ into the water. Allow the ‘sausages’ to soak on their own, don’t push into the water! This allows the floral foam to soak up as much water as possible.

Top Tip: Check out our Beginners Guide to OASIS® Floral Foam for how to cut, soak and use your floral foam!

Step 3

Place your soaked netted ‘sausages’ either on the single brick trays or on a plate, bowl or tray you have around your home. This an optional step, but it will protect surfaces from the wet floral foam and flowers. Secure your soaked OASIS® Floral Foam Netted Garland to your brick tray or plates using pot tape – wrap around the foam and container a couple of times.

Step 4

Gather your foliage and flowers and cut to length using your OASIS® Floral Scissors. The longer your stems, the bigger your festive floral garland!

Top Tip: It’s a great idea to cut different length stems to create a natural look.

Step 5

Now it’s time to get creative! Start by inserting your foliage into the OASIS® Floral Foam Netted Garland. We normally start with foliage, as it creates a good base, and then we use flowers to cover any gaps!

Top Tip: Don’t forget to insert stems at the ends of your garland too – make sure all the ‘sausages’ are covered in beautiful flowers and foliage.

Step 6

This step is an optional extra, but we highly recommend to really make your DIY fresh Christmas garland pop with festive cheer!

Grab your OASIS® Secateurs and head outdoors and get foraging! It’s amazing what you will find when out and about. This time of year, our favourites are pinecones. You can wrap wire in between the gaps of the pinecone and insert into the OASIS® Floral Foam Netted Garland.

Or, why not wire two or three cinnamon sticks together and insert into the sausages. This can really enhance the look and scent of your festive floral garland!
